{"id":28166,"date":"2012-03-12T11:24:49","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T15:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/countingpips.com\/fx\/2012\/03\/12\/organovos-3d-bioprinting-a-win-for-pharmaceuticals\/"},"modified":"2012-03-12T11:24:49","modified_gmt":"2012-03-12T15:24:49","slug":"organovos-3d-bioprinting-a-win-for-pharmaceuticals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.investmacro.com\/fx\/2012\/03\/12\/organovos-3d-bioprinting-a-win-for-pharmaceuticals\/","title":{"rendered":"Organovo\u2019s 3D Bioprinting: A Win for Pharmaceuticals?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"left\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\ntweetmeme_style = 'compact';\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/tweetmeme.com\/i\/scripts\/button.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28029\" title=\"Organovo's 3D Bioprinting: A Win for Pharmaceuticals?\" src=\"http:\/\/www.investmentu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/organovo-3d-bioprinting-pharmaceuticals.jpg\" alt=\"Organovo's 3D Bioprinting: A Win for Pharmaceuticals?\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since 3D bioprinting creates a product similar to human tissue, it could help pharmaceutical companies spot drugs that would fail long before they reach clinical trials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What you\u2019re about to read could change the world of medicine as we know it.<\/p>\n<p>The technology I\u2019m talking about is three-dimensional cellular construction, better known as 3D bioprinting, and the company delivering this revolutionary technology is <strong>Organovo<\/strong> (OTC: <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=ONVO.PK\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ONVO.PK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Based in San Diego and founded in 2007, Organovo is a startup that looks to take regenerative medicine to the next level with its bioprinting technology.<\/p>\n<h2>How It Works<\/h2>\n<p>Organovo has created the NovoGen MMX Bioprinter\u2122, the only commercial bioprinter in the world proven to create tissue.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Using both a software and hardware platform, NovoGen can take primary or other human cells and form them into three-dimensional tissue.<\/p>\n<p>You might have heard of companies who are already in the <a title=\"3D Printing Comes of Age\" href=\"http:\/\/www.investmentu.com\/2011\/June\/3d-printing.html\">3D printing industry<\/a> like <strong>Stratasys<\/strong> (Nasdaq: <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=SSYS&amp;ql=0\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">SSYS<\/a>) or <strong>3D Systems<\/strong> (NYSE: <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=DDD&amp;ql=0\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">DDD<\/a>), which can scan and make objects out of various materials. But what separates Organovo printers from others is that their ink is human tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the \u201cCliffsNotes\u201d version:<\/p>\n<p>The process involves taking a person\u2019s cells, for example, muscle cells, and growing those cells in a culture. Once enough cells are present, an enzyme is applied that releases them from the growing surface and they\u2019re loaded into a pellet-like structure.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is incubation; this is where the cells start to attach to one another. After incubation, cells are placed into a nutrient broth in a Petri dish, where they feed and continue to attach. This is the beginning stage of solid tissue formation.<\/p>\n<p>Next the forming tissue is sucked into a glass tube that serves as an ink cartridge and is loaded into the printer. With a computer-programmed script, the printer deposits the tissue into the desired shape.<\/p>\n<p>The NovoGen will deposit the tissue one line at a time on top of a layer of gel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28028\" title=\"As you can see, the 3D printer deposits tissue on top of each gel layer, eventually creating a single piece of tissue.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.investmentu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/bioprinting.jpg\" alt=\"3D bioprinting\" width=\"302\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Over a few days, the cells will merge into a single piece of tissue. After the tissue growth is entirely complete, it\u2019s virtually identical to something removed from a human.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the company has created several tissue types including lung, cardiac muscle and blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>So where\u2019s the money in this?<\/p>\n<h2>Printing for Pharmaceuticals<\/h2>\n<p>Drug and biotech companies for decades have seen promising drugs fail in clinical trails.<\/p>\n<p>Companies would see drugs initially tested in cell cultures and animals pass with flying colors, only to have them fail in clinical trials, since animals and cultures are extremely different from human tissue.<\/p>\n<p>With Organovo\u2019s 3D printing system, it becomes a new story for saving time and cost.<\/p>\n<p>Since the NovoGen printer creates a product so similar to human tissue, it could help drug researchers spot drugs that would fail long before they reach clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>And knowing that a potential drug wouldn\u2019t make it past clinical trials could possibly save drug companies billions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The company is actively experimenting to prove that its <a title=\"Bioprinting Video: The Next Medical Breakthrough in Action\" href=\"http:\/\/www.investmentu.com\/2011\/October\/3d-bioprinting-technology.html\">3D bioprinting technology<\/a> can help drug companies identify drug toxicity before other tests. Organovo has already started the groundwork to set up partnerships with major drug companies, and first on their list is the drug giant Pfizer.<\/p>\n<p>But it isn\u2019t just drug companies that the company is targeting; they have bigger ideas in motion.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Implications for the Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to Donate Life America, more than 100,000 people currently need life-saving organ transplants in the United States. And another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list every 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>On average, 18 people die everyday due to a lack of organ transplants available.<\/p>\n<p>And while organ donors provide a selfless act, out current system of transplanting organs from one human to the next still holds high chances of rejection.<\/p>\n<p>Transplant rejection happens when transplanted tissue is rejected by the human recipient\u2019s immune system. While rejections can be decreased by immunosuppressant drugs and finding molecular similarity between recipients and donors, they still happen frequently.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Organovo hopes to step in and change the transplant game for good.<\/p>\n<p>To date the company has only made small pieces of tissue, but the final goal is to use 3D tissue creating technology to print complete organs for transplants.<\/p>\n<p>Organs could be created using a patient\u2019s own cell, providing a lesser danger of transplant rejection.
