{"id":27100,"date":"2012-02-03T16:00:38","date_gmt":"2012-02-03T21:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/countingpips.com\/fx\/2012\/02\/03\/turkcell-benefiting-from-an-emerging-markets-rally-2\/"},"modified":"2012-02-03T16:00:38","modified_gmt":"2012-02-03T21:00:38","slug":"turkcell-benefiting-from-an-emerging-markets-rally-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.investmacro.com\/fx\/2012\/02\/03\/turkcell-benefiting-from-an-emerging-markets-rally-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkcell:  Benefiting from an Emerging Markets Rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sizemoreletter.com\/\" target=\"blank\">By The Sizemore Letter<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investorplace.com\/best-stocks-for-2012\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3149\" title=\"2012_BestStocks_Logo-copy-136x125\" src=\"http:\/\/sizemoreletter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2012_BestStocks_Logo-copy-136x125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>You know that you\u2019re up against some fierce competition when a stock you recommend is up by more than double the S&amp;P 500\u2019s return and yet you\u2019re in 5<sup>th<\/sup> place.\u00a0 Yet such is life in early 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turkcell (NYSE: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/TKC\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>TKC<\/a>),<\/strong> my pick for the InvestorPlace \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investorplace.com\/best-stocks-for-2012\/\">10 Best Stocks for 2012<\/a>\u201d contest, is off to a great start.\u00a0 Through February 1, the stock was up 12 percent for the year, compared to the 5.5 percent gains in the S&amp;P 500.<\/p>\n<p>With the January rally in industrials and materials firms, <strong>Caterpillar (NYSE: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/CAT\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>CAT<\/a>)<\/strong> and <strong>Alcoa (NYSE: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/AA\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>AA<\/a>)<\/strong> jumped out to an early start, up 22 percent and 18 percent, respectively.\u00a0 Long-time <a href=\"http:\/\/sizemoreletter.com\/turkcell-benefiting-from-an-emerging-markets-rally\/sizemoreletter.com\"><em>Sizemore Investment Letter<\/em><\/a> recommendation <strong>Microsoft (Nasdaq: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/MSFT\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>MSFT<\/a>)<\/strong> has also enjoyed a nice bounce this year, up 15 percent.\u00a0 But the real winner so far has been medical device maker <strong>Mako Pharmaceutical (Nasdaq: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/MAKO\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>MAKO<\/a>)<\/strong>, up a remarkable 44 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The best performing stocks on the list are some of the most cyclical, and I am quite happy to see that.\u00a0 It means that investor risk appetites are returning.\u00a0 \u00a0Barring a major blowup coming out of Europe, I expect this to continue and I recommend that investors maintain over-weighted positions in the beaten-down markets of Europe and emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p>2011 was a bad year for emerging markets in general and Turkish stocks in particular, and the strong start to 2012 leads me to believe the rout is officially over.\u00a0 All things in life are fleeting, and perhaps nothing more so than stock market gains.\u00a0 Still, buying shares of world-class companies when their prices are temporarily depressed is as close to a fool-proof investment strategy as I have ever seen, and the 2011 emerging market bear market has given us a great opportunity in Turkcell.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/countingpips.com\/fx\/?attachment_id=3150\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3150 \" title=\"Romney\" src=\"http:\/\/sizemoreletter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Romney-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vote for Turkcell<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Apparently, republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney agrees. Upon releasing his tax returns to public scrutiny, it was revealed that the former Massachusetts governor is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/mitt-romney-has-shares-in-turkish-company-turkcell.aspx?pageID=238&amp;nid=12443&amp;NewsCatID=346\">Turkcell shareholder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In past articles, I written about the virtues of following the trades of other investors (see \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/sizemoreletter.com\/when-in-doubt-follow-the-greats\/\">When in Doubt, Follow the Greats<\/a>\u201d).\u00a0 I\u2019m not so sure Mr. Romney qualifies, but his ownership of the shares certainly raises their profile.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, Turkcell confirmed recent media reports saying it is interested in acquiring Bulgarian telecom operator Vivacom. \u00a0\u00a0An expanded presence in Bulgaria would be a natural growth strategy for Turkcell.\u00a0 In addition to expanding in its home market, which is still far from saturated, Turkcell continues to establish itself as a leading telecom provider in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.\u00a0 Turkcell faces stiff competition for assets and new consumers in these markets from Britain\u2019s<strong> Vodafone (NYSE: <a href=\"http:\/\/stocktwits.com\/symbol\/VOD\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$<\/span>VOD<\/a>)<\/strong>, among others, though the company has repeatedly proven that it can compete against its much larger rivals.<\/p>\n<p>2012 is off to a great start, and I expect it to be a very profitable year for emerging market investors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By The Sizemore Letter You know that you\u2019re up against some fierce competition when a stock you recommend is up by more than double the S&amp;P 500\u2019s return and yet you\u2019re in 5th place.\u00a0 Yet such is life in early 2012.
