&nbsp;The meeting is Jean-Claude <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Claude_Trichet\">Trichet<\/a>&#8216;s last as the head of the ECB, as the new ECB president, Mario Draghi, takes the reins.<\/span><\/span><br \/>  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/post-edit.g?blogID=8290544642025682538&amp;postID=87842883447436222&amp;from=pencil\" name=\"132d90e925b5e582_more\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><a name='more'><\/a><span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/\" name=\"132d90e925b5e582_more\"><\/a><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blogger.g?blogID=8290544642025682538\" name=\"132d90e925b5e582_more\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><span><span><span><span>The ECB last increased the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/07\/ecb-hikes-monetary-policy-interest-rate.html\" target=\"_blank\">interest rates<\/a>&nbsp;by 25 basis points at its July meeting; pausing in May and June,&nbsp;after raising the rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/04\/european-central-bank-lifts-rate-25bps.html\" target=\"_blank\">April<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>&nbsp;this year. &nbsp;The Euro Area reported annual HICP inflation of 3% in September, 2.5% in August and July, 2.7% in June (same as May) and above the Bank&#8217;s inflation target of maintaining inflation below, but close to, 2% over the medium term. &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span><br \/>The Euro Area reported quarterly GDP growth in the June quarter of 0.2%, following a 0.8% increase in the March quarter, and a 0.3% increase in the December quarter of 2010. &nbsp;The Euro (EUR) last traded around 0.75 against the US dollar, placing the Euro about flat against the US dollar so far this year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><span>In August the ECB stayed firmly in the headlines as it announced a resumption of its&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/08\/ecb-holds-interest-rate-at-150-resumes.html\" target=\"_blank\">bond buying<\/a>&nbsp;program (SMP &#8211; Securities Market Program) at its previous meeting, which initially did not include Spain or Italy, which drove a significant elevation in uncertainty. &nbsp;The ECB subsequently signaled it would in fact&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/08\/european-central-bank-signals-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\">expand<\/a>&nbsp;the purview of that program, and made significant purchases (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/08\/ecb-buys-record-amount-of-bonds-under.html\" target=\"_blank\">22 billion<\/a>&nbsp;in the first week of renewed buying, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/08\/ecb-adds-143-billion-to-smp-total.html\" target=\"_blank\">14 billion<\/a>&nbsp;in the subsequent week). &nbsp;The ECB also announced the resignation of key board member,&nbsp;<\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/2011\/09\/jurgen-stark-resigns-from-position-at.html\" target=\"_blank\">J\u00fcrgen Stark<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span>  <span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.CentralBankNews.info<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/8290544642025682538-5604307575245402789?l=www.centralbanknews.info\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;European Central Bank&nbsp;(ECB) maintained&nbsp;the Main refinancing operations rate unchanged at 1.50%, the Marginal lending facility at 2.25% and Deposit facility at 0.75%. &nbsp;The Bank said &#8220;the President of the ECB will comment on the considerations underlying these decisions at a press conference starting at 2.30 p.m. CET today.&#8221;
