Pok\u00e9mon GO may be the latest mad internet-age fad destined to explode and then burn out like a Roman candle within days, weeks or months of ignition \u2014 only time will tell.<\/p>\n

But at the heart of the explosion of kids chasing animated creatures down city blocks and public parks, there\u2019s a big blue light spinning, signaling something exciting.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a more durable phenomenon that we call \u201caugmented reality,\u201d and it\u2019s driving \u201cexponential medicine\u201d \u2014 that will make everybody go \u201cAwww!\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a sneaky truth about Pok\u00e9mon GO: In addition to making that old Japanese franchise new again, it gets people up off their butts and out into the world.<\/p>\n

It turns them into \u201ctrainers,\u201d searching far and wide, from Pok\u00e9Stop to Pok\u00e9Stop (and Pok\u00e9 gyms in between) collecting Pok\u00e9 Balls, Pok\u00e9 eggs, and Pok\u00e9 potions.<\/p>

That requires a lot of walking around town. So people are exercising and getting to know their communities.<\/p>\n

Though the pursuit of the Pok\u00e9 hasn\u2019t gone off without incident, Pok\u00e9mon GO is, in the main, a positive force for physical and mental well-being.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the location-based, GPS-driven game is just scratching the surface of what\u2019s possible with augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the future of medical technology.<\/p>\n

Before we delve into how they\u2019re revolutionizing experiences for patients and doctors, let\u2019s define AR and VR, with help from Augment.com.<\/p>\n

AR \u201clayers computer-generated enhancements atop an existing reality\u201d to make our interactions with them more meaningful.<\/p>\n

This is what Google spinoff Niantic Inc. has done with Pok\u00e9mon GO, which is an app for mobile devices that blends digital components into the real world. Digital components enhance the real world and vice versa, but one can be distinguished from the other.<\/p>\n

VR, on the other hand, simulates or recreates a real-life environment or situation, by immersing the user in a \u201cfirsthand\u201d experience via stimulation of vision and hearing.<\/p>\n

Think Facebook Inc.\u2019s<\/strong> (FB) Oculus Rift device, which creates and enhances video and computer games as well as 3-D movies with a head-mounted display.<\/p>\n

In short, as Augment.com explains, \u201cVirtual reality offers a digital recreation of a real-life setting, while augmented reality delivers virtual elements as an overlay to the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve discussed \u201cexponential technologies\u201d in this space.<\/p>\n

AR and VR, in addition to their entertainment uses, are part of a pretty substantial subset: fast-moving technologies in the reinvention and future of health and medicine.<\/p>\n

Singularity Hub calls it \u201cexponential medicine.\u201d We\u2019re already seeing positive results for doctors, medical students and, most importantly, the real people they treat.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re already seeing the impact of AR and VR in the real medical world, thanks mainly to the ready availability of Google Glass (news of its death is greatly exaggerated) and low-cost headsets such as the Oculus Rift, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.\u2019s<\/strong> (SSNLF) Gear VR, and HTC Corp.\u2019s<\/strong> (HTCXF) Vive.<\/p>\n

Document technology startup Augmedix is using Google Glass to enable remote note-taking and chart-keeping by physicians during examinations, saving time, boosting efficiency, and allowing doctors to give greater attention to patients.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a big step in the age of electronic health records.<\/p>\n

And Brain Power \u2014 a company that offers \u201cthe first wearable classroom for people with autism\u201d \u2014 is using Glass as a \u201cneuro-assistive device\u201d to help kids and adults on the autism spectrum, often marginalized, overcome significant educational challenges.<\/p>\n

Brain Power\u2019s tech gives them the power to teach themselves life skills, using \u201cemotion decoding\u201d and assessing progress numerically.<\/p>\n

Another company, Meta, is working on a \u201cnext-generation\u201d AR headset for use in medicine as well as manufacturing, communications and media, simulation and education, and 3D modeling.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 1,000 developers and companies\u201d are using Meta already, with huge promise to deliver apps for use by doctors and patients.<\/p>\n

As for VR, such capabilities will make invaluable teaching tools. And there are already realized benefits for patients, too.<\/p>\n

In April 2016, a company called Medical Realities, founded by Dr. Shafi Ahmed, live-streamed the world\u2019s first VR surgery.<\/p>\n

Animation studio Vedavi Medical\u2019s VR Human Anatomy program will give medical students the opportunity to \u201cliterally pick apart the human body with your hands and inspect it naturally,\u201d as RoadToVR.com puts it. Thus, as the company notes, students can \u201covercome the stereotype of the complexity of [learning] the human anatomy.\u201d<\/p>\n

As MIT Technology Review<\/em> reported on July 18, 2016, another startup, AppliedVR, is \u201cbuilding a library of virtual reality content for alleviating pain and anxiety before, during, and after medical procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n

A study of patients using AppliedVR\u2019s tech at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, found that it reduced their acute pain by an average of 24%. And that\u2019s \u201cnot too different from what we see from giving narcotics,\u201d according to a Cedars-Sinai research director.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall minds,\u201d said French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Blaise Pascal, \u201care concerned with the extraordinary, great minds with the ordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Exponential medicine combines extraordinary with ordinary \u2014 way-out-there technology to solve age-old problems.<\/p>\n
