The interview can wait. Incredibly strong demand for lithium is evidence that a paradigm shift to the\u00a0Lithium-ion Battery (\u201cLi-B\u201d)\u00a0is well underway.\u00a0Tesla Motors\u00a0just announced that it\u2019s moving forward its goal of producing\u00a0500,000 EVs from 2020 to 2018.\u00a0If achieved, Tesla\u00a0will need a lot more Li-Bs, and will need them a lot faster.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">As a quick reminder,\u00a0Nano One is developing patented, scalable and low-cost processing technology for the production of high performance battery materials used in Li-Bs powering EVs, energy storage systems &amp; consumer electronics, and in a number of other end uses. The Company\u2019s growing portfolio of patents and associated IP supports proprietary technology that can be configured for a wide range materials. Nano One is approaching the pilot plant stage.<\/div>\n<p>People, Partners, Patents &amp; Process<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">Nano One\u2019s valuable IP is of paramount importance, so is its built-in operating flexibility, allowing it to seamlessly shift with battery material trends. The team\u2019s novel, three-stage processing technology uses off-the-shelf equipment and is engineered with the anticipation of high volumes. Having recently been approved for a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nano-one-approved-for-2-million-sdtc-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nano-one-approved-for-2-million-sdtc-grant\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHFNygBYHG3uXyIdD9dbZ3XgwXH4g\">$2.1 million grant<\/a>, and having collected another $2.9 million from the exercise of warrants, the Company is well funded as its processing technology approaches pilot plant stage. That\u2019s why a dedicated, entrepreneurial team of scientists, process &amp; mechanical engineers and electrochemists\u00a0can come together to build a robust enterprise. An expert team that can develop valuable IP, a firm not easily replicated. While the Company is bound to face competition, in a global Li-B market that could top $100 billion by decade\u2019s end, there should be plenty of room for all.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t fear unknown technology, if it were easier, everyone would be doing it<\/p>\n<p>Any potentially game-changing technology is, by definition, difficult to comprehend. Here\u2019s how\u00a0Chairman Paul Matysek\u00a0described it to me in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/2015\/11\/04\/chairman-interview-paul-matysek-of-nano-one-materials-leading-lithium-technology-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/2015\/11\/04\/chairman-interview-paul-matysek-of-nano-one-materials-leading-lithium-technology-company\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHFYLTGESGL7X95Q5b7bGtuc-sUtQ\">an interview<\/a>,<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<blockquote><p><em>Nano One\u2019s processing technology could enable a new generation of batteries by making it economically viable to produce a wider range of advanced energy storage materials. We start with low cost raw materials, such as lithium carbonate, and blend it with other metals using a scalable, patented process. This reduces manufacturing complexity and cost, while delivering materials that are more robustly structured for longer lasting performance. We aim to license and partner with key players in the industry to commercialize our technology, and are already having meetings with a number of parties.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">Nano One is in the enviable position of entirely sidestepping the myriad risks of mining for lithium or graphite. In fact, the Company is largely material and Li-B type agnostic. Instead of fearing change, Nano One stands to thrive from it. The Company need not care which cutting-edge battery is gaining traction, so the fundamentals &amp; pricing of materials are irrelevant. The Company proposes to make low-cost, consistently high-quality, battery materials, enabling increased adoption of Li-Bs across an even wider range of end-uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ci5.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/JaCFeU7L3D2NFjmQvzTvwGvuMIbq09O2LELbcYsM-8LiM-9PIgBTC1c0dcDQ03cYORi_MYYcSfaw6mqsgQksDF0uih52eUqO6NngZ-n2lnRo-QQZAU-NrwjA2nGFd_bdkQy9YQp_Bz5etPUHqHqIMvkkil3k=s0-d-e1-ft#http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-05-at-10.03.21-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 10.03.21 AM\" width=\"358\" height=\"97\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">While most investors don\u2019t understand the intricacies of Nano One\u2019s processing technology, three key constituents absolutely do. First and foremost, Nano One has been issued\u00a03 foundational patents and has 10 pending\u00a0in the U.S. and abroad. Patents are a strong validation of the Company\u2019s technology. CEO &amp; Director Blondal commented on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nr_march17\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nr_march17\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFirkxPq2a9HeyvtcawSgNqOsefAg\">company\u2019s third patent<\/a>,<\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis battery patent is significant in a few ways,\u00a0<\/em><em>and<\/em><em>marks another milestone in the growth and valuation of Nano One\u2019s patent portfolio. The Taiwanese are global battery players and this issuance provides validation and positioning in the Asian market. This third patent also extends Nano One\u2019s patent portfolio across the value chain to include processing, materials and now batteries.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nano One has the potential upside of Li-Bs, without the risks of mining<\/p>\n<p>Second, as mentioned, the Company was approved for a $2.1 million grant, in a process described as involving detailed due diligence. Additional grants are actively being pursued, each involving more due diligence. Third, the\u00a0<a>recent announcement<\/a>\u00a0that lithium expert\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/activities\/joe-lowry+0_2e0sVchlNQGjBlan2EOXIG?trk=prof-0-sb-rcnt-act-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/activities\/joe-lowry%2B0_2e0sVchlNQGjBlan2EOXIG?trk%3Dprof-0-sb-rcnt-act-link&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNErx56cxy_gCPydCtxC57DizLtDFA\">Joe Lowry<\/a>\u00a0is joining the Company as a Strategic Advisor is another vote of confidence. I personally know that his expertise, professionalism &amp; credibility are second to none.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd a6T aligncenter\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/ci3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/aPq1Pt2DTovURa-DbfSCh8nEAl9sfiAW7IhU7mopX8HWMnYmJsnwJS6B_tiCdrqbCndbnUpbpz6VMG0RSlnvNn-MALboZzZWKiSewITloZUNqQFV2VuLTxwXFbLkey2_pT5E-26XKA4tShxtldc1I6GePQY=s0-d-e1-ft#http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-05-at-9.41.39-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 9.41.39 AM\" width=\"365\" height=\"305\" \/>At this point, I\u2019m excited to share with readers what I believe encapsulates a big part of what the Company is trying to achieve. On <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1073257714\"><span class=\"aQJ\">March 31st<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nno_nr_mar31_2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/nanoone.ca\/nno_nr_mar31_2016\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGnogS9Ja8gbr5gAgUS-DssEZkChw\">Nano One announced<\/a>\u00a0that through its patented process, it successfully produced high-voltage cobalt-free, Li-B materials. Blondal reported,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\"><em>\u201cOur patented process has produced material that shows better longevity with over 10 times less energy fade\u00a0<\/em><em>and we\u2019ve measured up to 50% more energy at high rates of discharge. This material is remarkably stable and could be very competitive with existing commercial materials in terms of its high voltage performance and its cobalt free cost advantages.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Chairman Matysek added,<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\"><em>\u201cCobalt adds considerable cost and supply chain risk to most [Li-Bs].<\/em><em>The most recent battery material being produced by Nano One requires only lithium, manganese and nickel,\u00a0no cobalt. This should be well received by the battery industry as it reduces costs, environmental footprint and supply chain risks, while providing high-voltage advantages for next generation [Li-Bs].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">The key takeaway here is profound. Cobalt is a, \u201cconflict mineral,\u201d because a very large portion of global supply comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Sourcing cobalt is fraught with a number of moral, economic &amp; logistical challenges making it controversial, to say the least. Enter Nano One Materials. As the news release states, the scientists formulated a battery material that does not use cobalt. Further, the new concoction shows signs of possibly being superior to, \u201cexisting commercial materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">This is a win-win-win outcome that also highlights Nano One\u2019s growing capabilities.\u00a0Through the development of new materials or following a battery recipe for prospective customers, there are multiple reasons why larger players in the battery chain should want to work with Nano One. In a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/2015\/09\/16\/nano-one-materials-working-with-leading-battery-makers-near-term-catalysts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/2015\/09\/16\/nano-one-materials-working-with-leading-battery-makers-near-term-catalysts\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1462567195207000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHy_zLHjTNLI0lvoVwN5TtrGSZ7NQ\">prior article<\/a>, I described the Company\u2019s potential product portfolio, operational flexibility and high-quality solutions as an outsourced R&amp;D \/ contract manufacturing function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">Outsourcing certain manufacturing steps to Nano One would \u00a0allow upstream players to concentrate on other important aspects of their businesses.\u00a0Recall that the Company expects to be able to slash up to 50% from the cost of supplying critical battery-ready materials. This is extremely important because cutting costs at the battery manufacturing level is hard to do. The low hanging fruit has been eaten and eventually, economies of scale exhibit diminishing returns. However, Nano One will have its own economies of scale benefits, separate from that of its customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail_default\">Conclusion<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd a6T alignleft\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/ci3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/nL2AA_mzsIaE1pe2EhqFNi4Gk_FDTX5nbtET-ZcUwnsqfri7546AIC669WMBca7jdlVxSQxXyY8LgmZjxnba_KZo1w9C8TaVcFpY4CR4ha9_0yeY3A-uuTdr2qnW1SWDHiVGY1fymFetlzoWo49ibdW2_pU=s0-d-e1-ft#http:\/\/epsteinresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-05-at-9.36.55-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 9.36.55 AM\" width=\"244\" height=\"107\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A parting quote from Chairman Matysek that reiterates the role that patents will play going forward,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nano One\u2019s patents cover a broad range of materials and were issued quickly with only minor revisions. This indicates to us that we have a unique technological edge with fertile ground to expand our IP portfolio. Think about that for a moment. Obviously, lithium &amp; graphite juniors share substantial upside potential from being tied to Li-B demand, but picking the winners from that group is, and will be, difficult. Make no mistake the Company\u2019s operating profile involves plenty of risks, but different risks from that of peer Li-B suppliers and aspiring battery material miners.
