Sterling was one of the top performers overnight as it rallied against the dollar to a high of $1.4287 and was last at $1.4232 in Tuesday\u2019s late Asian session.<\/p>\n

A pick up in risk appetite on Monday helped support the pound. Meanwhile, immediate risk for the currency will be UK inflation data for March, which will be released later today, with forecasts for a rise in the rate.<\/p>\n

The dollar was steady against the yen, after falling to a fresh seventeen-month low on Monday at 107.62. As Japanese equities opened higher today, the yen sold off, giving the US currency some reprieve.<\/p>\n

The dollar\u2019s decline stalled as investors were afraid that Japanese authorities would intervene in the markets after some officials warned on Monday that the yen moves were \u201cone-sided and speculative\u201d and that the Japanese government stood ready to intervene to weaken the currency.<\/p>\n

Also, the resurgence in the yen has driven expectations in the market for further easing from the Bank of Japan at its April 28 policy meeting.<\/p>

The euro traded above the key $1.14 level, last at $1.1406. The broadly weaker US dollar is lending support to the euro. On Thursday, the single currency touched a six-month high of $1.1454.<\/p>\n

In commodities, Brent crude, the international benchmark, was down 0.1 per cent at $42.79 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate, the US marker, was off by as much at $40.34.<\/p>\n

Gold gave up some gains today, down 0.3 per cent at $1,254.55 an ounce.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, several Federal Reserve officials will be speaking, which included Harker, Williams and Lacker.<\/p>\n
