Get ready for the next phase of internet evolution.<\/p>\n

By now, I\u2019m sure you\u2019re somewhat familiar with the \u201cInternet of Things<\/a>\u201d (IoT) concept \u2013 the idea that everything you can imagine will be connected to the internet.<\/p>\n

The rationale is that we\u2019ll be able to control anything from anywhere \u2013 such as your home security system, appliances, lighting, and sprinkler systems, to name just a few. It\u2019s designed to make life easier and more convenient for consumers\u2026 and in the process, manufacturers will learn more about their customers\u2019 preferences and how their devices are used.<\/p>\n

By 2020, Gartner predicts that around 26 billion devices will be connected to the web. Other estimates put the figure closer to a staggering 75 billion.<\/p>

Clearly, there\u2019s a wide discrepancy here! But we\u2019re getting a major signal that the theory is well on its way to becoming reality \u2013 and the world\u2019s biggest tech companies are battling to streamline the process and make it work efficiently\u2026<\/p>\n

Absolute Control<\/h2>\n

It doesn\u2019t take a rocket scientist to know that in order for the IoT to work, it will need to be straightforward and streamlined.<\/p>\n

After all, people simply won\u2019t be willing to learn how to interact with every device in their house using a different system. Heck, we\u2019ve already got that today, what with different displays, buttons, remote controls, and operations for various devices and appliances.<\/p>\n

Given that most devices will be controlled remotely, it\u2019s not worth the hassle to learn a new interface for every device. And people certainly aren\u2019t going to install separate apps on their smartphones for each of them!<\/p>\n

Well, the tech world is on the case\u2026<\/p>\n

For an Internet of Things, We\u2019ll Need a Universe<\/em> of Things<\/h2>\n

To achieve uniformity and streamlining among our devices, a growing number of large tech firms are seeking to create a \u201cuniverse\u201d of things.<\/p>\n

In other words, device-controlling systems where the interface is common and easy to use from a single application.<\/p>\n

Another benefit to such a universe is that the devices on it can communicate and work with each other. For example, your dishwasher will be able to \u201ctalk\u201d to your hot water heater to see if there\u2019s enough hot water to handle doing the dishes, while still keeping enough for the family\u2019s showers.<\/p>\n

The most well-known creator of an IoT universe is Google<\/strong> (GOOGL<\/a>), which led the trend with its Nest thermostat. The Nest system now claims that over 5,000 applications are in various stages of development.<\/p>\n

And Facebook<\/strong> (FB<\/a>) just jumped in, too\u2026<\/p>\n

Facebook Enters the Fray<\/h2>\n

At Facebook\u2019s recent developer conference, the company announced its entry into the IoT in a big way.<\/p>\n

The move wasn\u2019t unexpected, given that it acquired Parse in 2013 \u2013 a company that was developing exactly the sort of software required to manage an IoT universe.<\/p>\n

But Facebook has now finally made the tools available to developers, so they can get to work on the various \u201cthings\u201d to connect to Facebook\u2019s universe.<\/p>\n

In fact, one of those developers announced a product that\u2019s almost ready for shipment. Roost<\/a> is taking preorders for a Wi-Fi, internet-enabled battery. Why would you want such a thing?<\/p>\n

Well, while this battery looks like any other nine-volt battery, it\u2019s specifically designed for smoke alarms \u2013 and offers some key upgrades\u2026<\/p>\n
