The Ukrainian hryvnia also lost the most value of any paper currency in 2014, falling nearly <span style=\"color: #000000;\">50%<\/span> (relative to the U.S. dollar).<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, though, the hryvnia wasn\u2019t the worst-performing currency in 2014. That dubious distinction belongs to digital currency Bitcoin, which collapsed by nearly<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> 60%<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>With 2014 in the history books, let\u2019s take a look at how various financial assets and investments performed last year\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Equities<\/h2>\n<p>Despite rising geopolitical risk, the S&amp;P 500 posted a solid year. The <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 Trust<\/strong> (<a title=\"SPDR S&amp;P 500 Trust on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=SPY\" target=\"_blank\">SPY<\/a>) gained <span style=\"color: #000000;\">13.5%<\/span> on a total return basis, aided by <strong>Apple\u2019s<\/strong> (<a title=\"Apple on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=AAPL\" target=\"_blank\">AAPL<\/a>) <span style=\"color: #000000;\">41%<\/span>\u00a0romping.<\/p>\n<p>The best-performing stock in the S&amp;P 500 this year was <strong>Southwest Airlines<\/strong> (<a title=\"Southwest Airlines on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2DFgfME?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=LUV\" target=\"_blank\">LUV<\/a>), with a 126% advance. Meanwhile, the worst performer was deepwater driller <strong>Transocean<\/strong> (<a title=\"Transocean on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2Anv7gF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=RIG\" target=\"_blank\">RIG<\/a>), with a 60% decline, including dividends.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wallstreetdaily.com\/wallstreet-research\/charts\/1214_SelectedTotalReturns.png\" alt=\"Selected 2014 Total Returns\" width=\"500\" height=\"370\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"A \u201cStress Utility Vehicle\u201d Engineered for This Market\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wallstreetdaily.com\/2014\/04\/03\/utility-stocks-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Utilities<\/a> proved to be the best-performing U.S. sector and, unsurprisingly, energy was the worst sector.<\/p>\n<p>Small-cap stocks trailed their large-cap brethren since the end of the first quarter. The <strong>iShares Russell 2000<\/strong> <strong>ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"iShares Russell 2000 ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2Anv7gF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=IWM\" target=\"_blank\">IWM<\/a>) returned 5<span style=\"color: #000000;\">%<\/span> for the full year.<\/p>\n<p>International stocks as a whole didn\u2019t fare as well as U.S. equities. The <strong>iShares MSCI EAFE<\/strong> (<a title=\"iShares MSCI EAFE on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2CG684F?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=EFA\" target=\"_blank\">EFA<\/a>), a proxy for stock markets in developed nations, returned\u00a06%.<\/p>\n<p>Emerging markets, meanwhile, were a mixed bag in 2014. China\u2019s Shanghai Composite rocketed 50% higher, posting the best performance of any global equity index. India\u2019s Sensex also surged around 30<span style=\"color: #000000;\">%<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Greece\u2019s Athex Composite fell 37%, and Russia\u2019s RTS Index was the worst-performing global equity index, plummeting over\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">40%<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the bifurcation of emerging market returns, the <strong>iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2CG684F?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=EEM\" target=\"_blank\">EEM<\/a>) returned just &#8211;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">4%<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Commodities<\/h2>\n<p>Most commodities came under pressure in 2014, with the CRB Commodity Index falling to its lowest level in over\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">five<\/span> years.<\/p>\n<p>It was certainly a painful year for oil bulls as the massive, net-long speculative futures position in crude oil continues to unwind. The <strong>United States Oil ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"United States Oil ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2CG684F?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=USO\" target=\"_blank\">USO<\/a>) fell <span style=\"color: #000000;\">42%<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t all bad, though, as a few commodities, such as live cattle and palladium, rose. Coffee was the best-performing commodity, after a brutal bear market lasting from 2011 through 2013. The <strong>iPath DJ-UBS Coffee Sub-Index ETN <\/strong>(<a title=\"iPath DJ-UBS Coffee Sub-Index ETN on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2BzAcAF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=JO\" target=\"_blank\">JO<\/a>) rose <span style=\"color: #000000;\">41%<\/span>\u00a0in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Gold was relatively unchanged, which was surprising considering the carnage in much of the commodity complex. The popular <strong>SPDR Gold Trust<\/strong> (<a title=\"SPDR Gold Trust on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2BzAcAF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=GLD\" target=\"_blank\">GLD<\/a>) declined <span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.2%<\/span> for the full year.<\/p>\n<h2>Fixed Income<\/h2>\n<p>As with commodities, fixed-income securities had an interesting year.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2BzAcAF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=HYG\" target=\"_blank\">HYG<\/a>) declined on a price basis, but eked out a 1.9<span style=\"color: #000000;\">%<\/span> gain on a total return basis.<\/p>\n<p>Investment-grade corporate bonds had a stronger showing in 2014 than high-yield bonds. The <strong>iShares iBoxx Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"iShares iBoxx Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2BzAcAF?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=LQD\" target=\"_blank\">LQD<\/a>) produced an <span style=\"color: #000000;\">8.2%<\/span> total return.<\/p>\n<p>However, bonds without credit risk were the big fixed-income winners in 2014. Using the <strong>Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF<\/strong> (<a title=\"Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF on Yahoo! Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q;_ylt=Am2sh9bBUqEO862xi0i4B2CG684F?uhb=uhb2&amp;fr=uh3_finance_vert_gs&amp;type=2button&amp;s=EDV\" target=\"_blank\">EDV<\/a>) as a proxy, Treasury bonds soared 45% last year.<\/p>\n<p>The performance of 30-year Treasuries was certainly a surprise for me, even though I was one of the few to advocate a position in intermediate-term <a title=\"The Top 7 Reasons to Buy Treasuries\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wallstreetdaily.com\/2014\/03\/20\/treasuries\/\" target=\"_blank\">Treasuries<\/a>\u00a0in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>From a risk-adjusted return perspective, 10-year Treasuries were perhaps the best-performing major financial asset in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, I think the so-called \u201cbelly\u201d of the Treasury curve \u2013 maturities around five years \u2013 offers a more-attractive risk-reward relationship.
