What Happened to Cochlear Ltd\u2019s Share Price?<\/h2>\n

Shares in bionic ear maker Cochlear Ltd [ASX:COH] shot up this morning, gaining more than 3% to close near 12-month highs. Today\u2019s price action pushes Cochlear\u2019s year-to-date capital growth beyond 20%.<\/p>\n

Why Did This Happen to COH Shares?<\/h2>\n

At yesterday\u2019s annual general meeting, chairman Rick Holliday-Smith talked up Cochlear\u2019s prospects. He pointed to new products in the pipeline and expressed confidence that Cochlear\u2019s quality will win out over the cheap knockoffs manufactured for and by the Chinese market.<\/p>\n

This has reassured investors that the company\u2019s growth has continued into the second half of 2014\u2026so the stock has continued to ascend.<\/p>\n

What Now For Cochlear Ltd?<\/h2>\n

Cochlear\u2019s success marketing new products is impressive. But you should recognise that all biotech companies \u2014 even ones as large as Cochlear \u2014 are at the whim of regulators.<\/p>\n

Long-term holders will cheer today\u2019s price action, as the market seems to prefer established large-caps to more speculative stocks right now. <\/p>
