{"id":168616,"date":"2020-04-13T12:32:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T16:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.countingpips.com\/?p=168616"},"modified":"2020-04-13T09:32:59","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T13:32:59","slug":"mongolia-cuts-rate-2nd-time-to-support-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.investmacro.com\/forex\/2020\/04\/mongolia-cuts-rate-2nd-time-to-support-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Mongolia cuts rate 2nd time to support economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"inves-2503595456\" class=\"inves-below-title-posts inves-entity-placement\"><div id =\"posts_date_custom\"><div align=\"left\">April 13, 2020<\/div><hr style=\"border: none; border-bottom: 3px solid black;\">\r\n<\/div><\/div><p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/\"><u>CentralBankNews.info<\/u><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mongolia&#8217;s central bank lowered its policy rate for the second time in as many months and extended the maturity of existing consumer loans by up to 12 months for borrowers experiencing difficulties to lessen the consequences of financial difficulties from the coronavirus and support economic activity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Central Bank of Mongolia (Mongolbank) cut its policy rate by 100 basis points to 9.0 percent at an unscheduled meeting of its monetary policy committee and has now cut it up 200 points this year following a similar cut on March 11.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: start;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">The bank&#8217;s policy committee had been scheduled to meet on June 19.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: start;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;The continued spread of COVID-19 has changed the external and domestic economic conditions in a short span of time, aggravating uncertainties, contracting business activities in the economy, weakening domestic demand, and resulting in difficulties in loan repayment,&#8221; Mongolbank said.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mongolia&#8217;s inflation rate rose to 6.4 percent in February from 5.6 percent in January but the central bank said demand-induced inflation is expected to be subdued on economic slack this year while lower oil prices is expected to affect supply-driven inflation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mongolia&#8217;s tughrik has been depreciating steadily since 2011 with the rate of its decline steady since October last year.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In response to the rate cut, the tughrik firmed to trade around 2,783 to the U.S. dollar, but still down 1.6 percent since the start of this year.<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Central Bank of Mongolia issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: 'PT Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; widows: 2;\">&#8220;The Monetary Policy Committee held an unscheduled meeting on the 13th of April 2020. The Committee decided to lower the policy rate by 1 percentage point to 9 percent and to extend the maturity limit on consumer loans up to 12 months for lenders experiencing difficulty in their loan repayments.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: 'PT Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; widows: 2;\">Annual headline inflation reached 6.4 percent nationwide and 6.9 percent in Ulaanbaatar city as of February 2020. The demand induced inflation is expected to be subdued as the economic growth slacks this year. The supply-driven volatility in inflation is anticipated to decline if the supply of some imported foods remains stable, along with a falling domestic price of fuel following the drop in global oil price.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: 'PT Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; widows: 2;\">The continued spread of COVID-19 has changed the external and domestic economic conditions in a short span of time, aggravating uncertainties, contracting business activities in the economy, weakening domestic demand, and resulting in difficulties in loan repayments.
