According to the median poll of economists,<strong>\u00a0manufacturing activity is forecast to dip from March\u2019s rebound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In March, manufacturing activity rose to 55.3. The forecasts for April show that activity could ease to 55.0.\u00a0<strong>This marks a 0.3 point decline from the month before<\/strong>. Despite the decline, activity for March is forecast to remain in expansionary mode.<\/p>\n<p>The data will be closely watched as it marks the first month for the second quarter of the year. In the first three months of the year,<strong>\u00a0manufacturing activity grew on average 55.0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the April data falls in line with the average pace of growth in the sector from the first quarter. Official data showed that manufacturing activity\u00a0<strong>rose to 55.3 in March, following a drop to 54.2 in February<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February\u2019s declines were recorded to be a two-year low in the index.<\/strong>\u00a0The data for March beat estimates of an increase to 54.6 for the period. Manufacturing activity for March saw the\u00a0<strong>index for new orders rising 1.9 points to 57.4<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>production index rose by one point to 55.8<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>employment index jumped 5.2 points in March to 57.5.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81219\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbex.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/NAPMPMI-Index-ISM-Manufacturing-2019-04-25-11-53-06.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener prettyphoto noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81219 size-full b-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbex.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/NAPMPMI-Index-ISM-Manufacturing-2019-04-25-11-53-06.png\" alt=\"ISM Manufacturing PMI\" width=\"1360\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">ISM Manufacturing PMI, March 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The data for March brought some cheer as manufacturing activity was in a moderate decline during the previous months.\u00a0<strong>Activity in the sector was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbex.com\/blog\/en\/2019\/01\/us-manufacturing-pmi-hits-15-month-low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0trending lower since last September<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>As a result, the rebound in March\u2019s activity brought some respite to a sector that was trending lower.<\/p>\n<p>The report from the March ISM survey showed that\u00a0<strong>16 out of 18 manufacturing industries reported growth during the month<\/strong>. One of the main takeaways from the March report was that there were\u00a0<strong>widespread skilled labor shortages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can the ISM PMI Beat Estimates?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is a small chance that the actual PMI data for April will beat the estimates of 55.0. Various regional indicators show that activity was mixed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The NY Fed\u2019s empire state manufacturing PMI\u00a0<strong>rose to 10.<\/strong>1 in April from 3.7 previously<\/li>\n<li>The Philly Fed manufacturing index\u00a0<strong>fell to 8.5<\/strong>\u00a0in April from 13.7 in March<\/li>\n<li>Finally, the Richmond Fed manufacturing index<strong>\u00a0fell to 3<\/strong>\u00a0from 10 in March<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another measure of the manufacturing activity from Markit saw the preliminary results to be somewhat weaker. According to IHS Markit, manufacturing activity in the United States<strong>\u00a0fell to 52.4 in April.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the previous month, Markit\u2019s measure of manufacturing was at 52.4. This was a weaker reading in the index comparing to the previous month of February.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the regional index outlook showing mixed, the prospects of a beat on the estimates remain low.<\/strong>However, given that the recent headwinds such as trade worries have eased, optimism could push the index higher.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses are likely to see some increase in activity as they head into the warmer periods of the year.\u00a0<strong>A pick up in inventory is likely while the employment index could most likely remain at the current levels<\/strong>. Businesses in the survey are likely to point out the continued shortage of skilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>This could potentially see a modest increase in the backlog of orders.\u00a0<strong>In March, inventories fell slightly by just over 1.5%.\u00a0<\/strong>They could, however, rebound in April.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, we see that the ISM manufacturing PMI could fall within expectations.
