All three main stock indices close at records<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

US stock indices\u00a0<\/b>ended at record highs but dollar slumped on Friday as retail sales rose while inflation remained unchanged in December. The\u00a0live dollar index<\/a>\u00a0data show the ICE US Dollar index, a measure of the dollar\u2019s strength against a basket of six rival currencies, fell 1% to 90.926 Friday.\u00a0S&P 500<\/a>\u00a0gained 0.7% to fourth straight closing record 2786.24 as retail sales rose 0.4% in December. The US broad market index gained 1.6% for the week.\u00a0Dow Jones\u00a0<\/em>industrial average jumped 0.9% to fresh record 25803.19. The\u00a0Nasdaq\u00a0<\/em>composite added 0.7% to 7261. Futures indicate higher market openings today.<\/p>\n

European stocks recover on German progress<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

European stock indices\u00a0<\/b>rebounded on Friday with market sentiment buoyed by progress in German coalition government talks. The\u00a0euro\u00a0<\/em>rallied against the dollar as German Chancellor Angela Merkel\u2019s conservative CDU party reached an initial deal with center-left SPD for formal coalition negotiations. The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.3% up 0.3% for the week. The\u00a0DAX 30\u00a0<\/em>added 0.3% to 13245.03. France\u2019s\u00a0CAC 40\u00a0<\/em>jumped 0.5% and UK\u2019s\u00a0FTSE 100\u00a0<\/a>gained 0.2% to fresh record 7778.64. Indices opened mixed today.<\/p>\n

Asian markets mixed<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Asian stock indices<\/b>\u00a0are mixed today.\u00a0Nikkei\u00a0<\/em>ended 0.3% higher at 23715 despite continued yen strength against the dollar. Chinese stocks are lower: the\u00a0Shanghai Composite Index\u00a0<\/em>is down 0.5% and Hong Kong\u2019s\u00a0Hang Seng\u00a0<\/em>Index is 0.2% lower. Australia\u2019s All Ordinaries Index is up 0.1% despite continued Australian dollar climb against the greenback.<\/p>\n

Oil higher<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Oil futures prices\u00a0<\/b>are edging higher today. Prices ended higher Friday supported by consecutive US crude stock weekly draws: March Brent rose 0.9% to $69.87 a barrel on Friday. It gained 3.3% in the week.<\/p>\n
