{"id":104165,"date":"2017-03-30T09:13:15","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T13:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/countingpips.com\/?p=104165"},"modified":"2017-03-30T09:13:15","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T13:13:15","slug":"fiji-keeps-rate-steady-inflation-seen-slowly-easing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.investmacro.com\/forex\/2017\/03\/fiji-keeps-rate-steady-inflation-seen-slowly-easing\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiji keeps rate steady, inflation seen slowly easing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"inves-1906069369\" class=\"inves-below-title-posts inves-entity-placement\"><div id =\"posts_date_custom\"><div align=\"left\">March 30, 2017<\/div><hr style=\"border: none; border-bottom: 3px solid black;\">\r\n<\/div><\/div><p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralbanknews.info\/\"><u>CentralBankNews.info<\/u><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Fiji&#8217;s central bank maintained its Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 0.50 percent &#8211; unchanged since October 2011 &#8211; saying its twin monetary policy objectives of adequate foreign reserves and low inflation were expected to remain intact.<br \/>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The Reserve Bank of Fiji said inflation, as expected, eased to 5.5 percent in February from 6.8 percent in January and is now expected to be around 3.0 percent by the end of the year, down from an estimate of 3.5 percent in the December quarterly review.<br \/>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Fiji&#8217;s inflation has been above average since since February last year when it was hit by Tropical Cyclone Winston, the worst ever cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere, leading to supply shortages.<br \/>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Foreign reserves rose to around $1.991 billion as of March 30, sufficient to cover 5.2 months of imports, and up from $1.976 billion as of Feb. 23.<br \/>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The bank&#8217;s governor, Barry Whiteside, said in a statement the outlook for domestic growth remained generally positive. Tourism, remittances and construction were up while there were weaker outcomes in mining and timber industries.<br \/>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Last month the central bank forecast 3.6 percent growth for this year after 2.0 percent in 2016.<br \/><a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; The Reserve Bank of Fiji issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">     <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">&#8220;The Reserve Bank of Fiji Board agreed to keep its Overnight Policy Rate unchanged at 0.5 percent following its monthly meeting on 30 March, 2017. <\/span><br \/>      <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">In announcing the decision, the Governor and Chairman of the Board, Mr Barry Whiteside highlighted that <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">this year\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">domestic growth outlook remained generally positive with upbeat performances in sectors such as tourism, remittances and construction, but weaker outcomes in the mining and timber industries. Domestic demand continues to be buoyant, as suggested by strong growth in partial indicators for consumption and investment including net VAT collections, vehicle sales and registrations and new bank lending. Adequate bank liquidity, low interest rates and favourable business sentiments, continue to support the economic expansion<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">. The Reserve Bank\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">December 2016 Business Expectations and Retail Sales surveys prove the optimism by businesses through expectations for improved economic conditions, higher investments and retail sales over the next twelve months. <\/span><br \/>      <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">On the global front, Mr Whiteside stated <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">global economic activity is expected to pick up in 2017 led by emerging market and developing economies and a turnaround in key advanced economies. A stronger global economy augurs well for the Fijian economy in terms of increased export demand, visitor arr<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">ivals and personal remittances.\u201d <\/span><br \/>      <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">Against the positive outlook for the economy, the Bank\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">twin monetary policy objectives are expected to remain intact. As expected, inflation eased to 5.5 percent in February having peaked to 6.8 percent in January, although remained high when compared to 1.2 percent in the same period last year. The current higher inflation continues to be driven by supply shortages of market items resulting from adverse weather conditions and the consistently high yaqona prices, post Tropical Cyclone Winston. Given the recent outcomes, the year-end inflation forecast is now expected to be around 3.0 percent. <\/span><br \/>      <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">Foreign reserves stood at around $1,991.0 million as at 30 March, sufficient to cover 5.2 months of retained imports of goods and non-factor services. <\/span><br \/>      <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12.000000pt;\">Taking into account the recent developments and outlook for the economy, Mr Whiteside stated that the current accommodative monetary policy stance remains appropriate to support growth while safeguarding macroeconomic stability.
