As a result, standard treatments become ineffective, infections persist and may spread to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>STAT News has it all in a January 12, 2017, headline: \u201cA Nevada Woman Dies of a Superbug Resistant to Every Available Antibiotic in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Writes Helen Braswell:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"blockquote\">Public health officials from Nevada are reporting on a case of a woman who died in Reno in September from an incurable infection. Testing showed the superbug that had spread throughout her system could fend off 26 different antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote\">\u201cIt was tested against everything that\u2019s available in the United States\u2026 and was not effective,\u201d said Dr. Alexander Kallen, a medical officer in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s division of healthcare quality promotion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So-called superbugs are ascendant because of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe misuse antibiotics everywhere,\u201d noted Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England, in a September 23, 2016, conversation with William Karesh of the Council on Foreign Relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re used for growth promotion and in well animals,\u201d Davies explained. \u201cSo they\u2019re actually substituting for good hygiene and sanitation. And as a result, infections \u2014 drug-resistant infections \u2014 are more prevalent in the States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Use of antibiotics in agriculture, aquaculture, ethanol production and other everyday applications \u201cprovides multiple opportunities for the selection and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria,\u201d read a study in <em>PLoS Biology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--Pull Quote Right--><\/p>\n<table class=\"pullquote\" border=\"0\" width=\"50%\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"25\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: italic; color: #f68e1e; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\" align=\"left\"><strong>\u201cTesting showed the superbug that had spread throughout her system could fend off 26 different antibiotics.\u201d<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--END Pull Quote Right--><\/p>\n<p>According to STAT News\u2019 Braswell, the Nevada woman had actually traveled extensively in India in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>She broke her femur a couple years back while on the subcontinent and subsequently developed an infection for which she was hospitalized there \u201ca number of times,\u201d the final instance in June 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-August, she was hospitalized in Reno and diagnosed with an infection of <em>Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/em>, which are generally linked with urinary tract infections.<\/p>\n<p><em>Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/em> are part of more generic classification, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, \u201cbacteria that commonly live in the gut that have developed resistance to the class of antibiotics called carbapenems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Braswell notes: \u201cCDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden has called CREs \u2018nightmare bacteria\u2019 because of the danger they pose for spreading antibiotic resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That this isn\u2019t strictly a homegrown AMR is no cause for comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. James Johnson, a professor of infectious diseases medicine at the University of Minnesota, tells Braswell it\u2019s \u201chighly improbable\u201d that the Nevada woman is the \u201conly person in the U.S.\u201d similarly afflicted.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely that other Americans \u201care carrying similar bacteria in their guts and could become sick at some point.\u201d Indeed, Johnson thinks \u201cthis is the harbinger of future badness to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s already pretty bad.<\/p>\n<p>As we discussed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetdaily.com\/2016\/10\/19\/superbugs-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria\/\"><strong>October 19, 2016, issue of <em>Wall Street Daily<\/em><\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"blockquote\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 2 million people per year in the United States become infected with bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote\">Worldwide, the number is more than 700,000. By 2050, we could be looking at 10 million AMR-related deaths per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote\">For reference\u2019s sake, cancer kills about 8.2 million worldwide annually.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last October, we highlighted a handful of companies that were beginning to respond to this emerging threat, including France-based Eligo Bioscience, which is researching a CRISPR\/Cas-based solution to the AMR problem.<\/p>\n<p><!--Pull Quote Right--><\/p>\n<table class=\"pullquote\" border=\"0\" width=\"50%\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"25\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 20px; font-style: italic; color: #f68e1e; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\" align=\"left\"><strong>It\u2019s likely that other Americans \u201care carrying similar bacteria in their guts and could become sick at some point.\u201d Indeed, Johnson thinks \u201cthis is the harbinger of future badness to come.\u201d<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--END Pull Quote Right--><\/p>\n<p>Eligo recently won the Startup Battle at Labiotech Refresh, the premier biotech conference in the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>As Clara Rodr\u00edguez Fern\u00e1ndez writes for Labiotech, \u201cThe startup\u2019s revolutionary approach consists in delivering CRISPR via phages to selectively kill nocive bacterial strains. These \u2018sequence-specific antimicrobials discriminate the bugs at the strain level while leaving the rest of the flora completely intact.\u2019 Since a healthy microbiome is closely linked with multiple aspects of human health, this technique could make a big change in how we fight disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seres Therapeutics Inc.<\/strong> (MCRB), a $400 million company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is developing an investigational oral microbiome therapeutic for the prevention of <em>Clostridium difficile infection<\/em> (CDI).<\/p>\n<p>CDI, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is one of the top three most urgent antibiotic-resistant bacterial threats in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Allergan Plc<\/strong> (AGN), <strong>AstraZeneca Plc<\/strong> (AZN), <strong>GlaxoSmithKline Plc<\/strong> (GSK), <strong>Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/strong> (JNJ), <strong>Merck &amp; Co.
