The much anticipated UK elections took place on Thursday, with the exit polls pointing to the likelihood of a Conservative victory.
Prime Minister David Cameron may very well remain at 10 Downing Street while the Labour party is on course for its worst loss since 1987.
As the results come out from each constituency, it was becoming quite evident that the Conservatives were gaining more seats in parliament and seemed set to overturn expectations. If the exit poll proves correct the Conservatives could form a majority coalition with their current partners, the Liberal Democrats. In terms of seats, the Conservatives are at 316 seats, Labour Party at 239, the Scottish National Party at 58 and the Liberal Democrats at 10.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) surprised many as they are set for an unprecedented landslide victory north of the border and swept aside the Labour party. Labour election chief Douglas Alexander lost his seat to the SNP’s Mhairi Black, a 20-year-old university student.
Ukip (UK Independent Party) has its first-ever MP – Douglas Carswell, who defected from the Conservatives, retained his seat in Clacton while Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg retained Sheffield Hallam.
