CFTC Futures data shows speculators advanced their bearish bets

10-Year Treasuries Non-Commercial Positions:

Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators added to their overall bearish positions last week as weekly positions have continued to fluctuate back and forth week to week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -183,116 contracts in the data reported for May 5th. This was a weekly change of -84,551 net contracts from the previous week’s total of -98,565 net contracts that was recorded on April 28th.

For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures decreased by 54,124 contracts and combined with the short positions that rose by 30,427 contracts to register the overall net change of -84,551 contracts for the week.

Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday April 28th to Tuesday May 5th, the yield on the 10-Year treasury note rose from 2.00 percent to 2.19 percent, according to data from the United States Treasury Department.

Commercial Positions:

In the commercial positions for 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) sharply increased their overall bullish positions for a total net position of +310,349 contracts through May 5th. This is a weekly change of +135,787 contracts from the total net position of +174,562 contracts on April 28th.
