CFTC Futures data shows speculators add to bearish bets

10 Year Treasuries: Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators added to their overall bearish positions last week after bearish bets had declined the previous week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -153,366 contracts in the data reported for April 21st. This was a weekly change of -41,463 net contracts from the previous week’s total of -111,903 net contracts that was recorded on April 14th.

For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures dropped by -54,328 contracts while the short positions fell by -12,865 contracts to register the overall net change of -41,463 contracts for the week.

Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday April 14th to Tuesday April 21st, the yield on the 10-Year treasury note edged slightly higher from 1.90 percent to 1.92 percent, according to data from the United States Treasury Department.
