Gold Speculators trim bullish positions slightly for 1st time in 6 weeks

Gold positions fall for first time in six weeks

GOLD: Large futures traders and gold speculators slightly trimmed their overall bullish bets last week after pushing bullish bets higher the previous five weeks, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of Comex gold futures, traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of +185,015 contracts in the data reported through February 3rd. This was a weekly change of -3,910 contracts from the previous week’s total of +188,925 net contracts that was registered on January 27th.

The decrease in the net speculator positions (-3,910 contracts) was due to an fall in the weekly bullish positions by -9,401 contracts that offset a smaller decline in the gold bearish positions by -5,491 contracts.

Gold speculative positions had gained eight out of the previous nine weeks before last week’s decline.

Over the weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday January 27th to Tuesday February 3rd, the gold price decreased from approximately $1,292.90 to $1,260.30 per ounce, according to gold futures price data from investing.com.
