SaxoBank hosts the next #TradingDebates event on 22 October at the British Museum in London
Event Details
On October 22 at the British Museum, financial experts and industry thought leaders will assemble in London for the fourth installment of #TradingDebates – Trading Volatility and Performance.
This month’s event focuses on the impact of low volatility and almost a decade of low interest rates on the financial markets. Should the prospect of rate hikes materialise, a new phase of market volatility is anticipated.
#TradingDebates will open with a keynote speech on The Evolution of the Markets and Innovation from Saxo Bank’s Head of Business Lines, Matteo Cassina, who will then join a panel to discuss the significant transformation of financial markets. In What Does the Future Hold for Trading Volumes and Market Structure? The Financial Times’ UK Markets Editor Phillip Stafford will moderate a panel that will explore a change in trading activity shaped by technological innovations, structural shifts and regulatory intervention. Turquoise CEO Dr Robert Barnes, Nomura’s Andrew Bowley, Sarah Hay of UBS and James Davis, Partner at Oliver Wyman, will offer insights into how market participants can stay ahead of the game.
A steep decline in transaction volumes and deal flows has facilitated the rise of new opportunities in financial technology. Anna Irrera, a Trading & Technology Reporter at Financial News, will oversee a panel of Accenture’s Julian Skan, Eurexchange’s Javier Tordable, Gerald Brady of Silicon Valley Bank and Ian Morgan, Director of Financial Services sector at Google UK to measure the effect of the Fintech ‘boom’, which has opened the door to new players in the industry, shaking the market structure. The debate on the Fintech Boom – an Opportunity or a Threat for Financial Service will question how effectively the traditional world of trading interacts with the new world of investment.
Martin Wolf, Chief Economics commentator at the Financial Times, will speak on The Shifts and the Shocks: What We’ve Learned – and Have Still to Learn – from the Financial Crisis before discussing the prospect of loose monetary policy programmes unwinding and impending interest rate hikes in Is the Global Economy Out of the Woods?

Should central banks begin to reverse QE and normalise policy, the panel including Danny Gabay, Director at Fathom Consulting, and Saxo Bank’s Chief Economist Steen Jakobsen will explore whether investors are prepared for a potentially major correction in asset prices.
The final panel considers: Will ‘Rate Rage’ Save the Euro or Sound its Death Knell? Despite a return to economic growth in the US and UK, a new era of euro weakness is speculated; is the euro’s decline a solution for, or a symptom of, Eurozone economic malaise and deflation? Bloomberg TV’s Jonathan Ferro will moderate a panel of Societe Generale’s Kit Juckes, Fathom Consulting’s Erik Britton, Geoffrey Yu of UBS and Saxo Bank’s Head of FX Strategy John Hardy.
We also encourage attendance online; join in the discussion with @SaxoMarkets and tweet #TradingDebates for the chance to win an iPhone 6 or an iPad Mini.
