In the most recent issue of Unconventional Wealth<\/em>, I showed readers four specific ways to take advantage of the “share economy.”<\/p>\n

How the share economy works is simple. I own things I’m not using. I
\ngive them to you at a reasonable price for an agreed period of time.<\/p>\n

You pay me, use the items I lend to you<\/strong><\/a> and then give them back. I repeat the process and lend my stuff out again for more money.<\/p>\n

Your second home… your car… your tools… your cameras… your
\nkitchen appliances \u2013 you already own plenty of “stuff” the share economy
\ncan turn into fresh capital.<\/p>\n

In the recent Unconventional Wealth<\/em> issue, I showed readers how to make $48,660 per year from the share economy. But there was one strand I didn’t cover in depth.<\/p>\n

Let me tell you all about it right now…<\/p>\n

Chances are you’ve at least heard of Airbnb. Put simply, Airbnb lets you rent or rent out places to stay.<\/p>\n

Airbnb will redefine how the world thinks of booking rooms while
\ntraveling. At the start of 2012, the company had 120,000 listings
\nworldwide. As I type, it has more than 300,000. The company has served
\nmore than 4 million travelers in total and had more than 3 million
\nbookings in 2012 alone.<\/p>\n

Here in the US, you can make about $100 per night renting out a private room to travelers. If you rent your entire house<\/strong><\/a>, apartment or condo, you can make substantially more.<\/p>\n

But even at $100 a night per person and renting a bedroom out
\njust two nights a week, you have the potential to make an extra $10,400
\na year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To get started, simply visit airbnb.com<\/strong><\/a>.
\nYou answer a few questions, such as what type of place you want to
\nrent, whether it’s a shared room or a private room, how many people the
\nroom can accommodate and what city you’re in.<\/p>\n

Then you can create your Airbnb profile with an email address and
\nupload pictures of your place. You never have to accept a booking you’re
\nnot comfortable with. And Airbnb handles all payments from bookings.
\nThe money appears in your account within 24 hours of your guest checking
\nin.<\/p>\n

But is the money worth it? That’s a question only you can answer.<\/p>\n

That’s why I recommend you visit the site and browse around for
\nlistings in your area. Your first step should be to figure out if the
\npossible listing you have to offer matches up well with (or better than)
\nothers near you.<\/p>\n

Where I live, in Baltimore, Maryland, a cozy one-bedroom apartment
\ncurrently rents on Airbnb for $175 per night. Private bedrooms go for
\n$60-110, depending on the location. Closer proximity to cultural
\nattractions, nightlife or public transit all boosts the price.<\/p>\n

If you live in the suburbs or a quiet neighborhood, you can still
\nbenefit. Some travelers, after all, want a peaceful place to stay. You
\ncan generate fresh income<\/strong><\/a> renting to these people too.<\/p>\n

The exponential “Facebook-style” growth of Airbnb hasn’t even begun
\nyet. When it does, and when it begins to challenge the major hotel
\nchains dollar for dollar, you want your presence on the site to be well
\nestablished so you collect the biggest potential rewards.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the equation, I recommend you use Airbnb as a
\nresource next time you travel. If you’re traveling on business and
\nvisiting a city for only one night, why pay $250 to stay at a faceless
\nhotel when you could probably spend half as much to stay in a home or
\napartment?<\/p>\n
