\nWith the proliferation of digital reading devices like Amazon\u2019s<\/b> (AMZN<\/a>) Kindle, Louis Basenese called for the death of print media<\/a> long ago.<\/p>\n

Now more and more book publishers are throwing their support behind the ebook market.<\/p>\n

They can\u2019t really afford not to. In the United States, ebook sales surpassed hardcover book sales back in June. And about one in four books in the U.K. are now read digitally.<\/p>\n

The only thing missing? Strong competition in the market, thanks to Amazon\u2019s dominance in the space.<\/p>\n

Some think that the new ereader from Kobo could change that, however.<\/p>\n

Philip Jones, Editor of The Bookseller, says, “The ebook market is dominated at the moment by one big Seattle giant called Amazon, which has, we think, 85% to 90% market share of all ebook sales sold in the U.K. And it’s not far off that in the States. So they want a diversified marketplace \u2013 with different resellers of ebooks and different booksellers in that market. And Kobo is one of the biggest challengers to Amazon. It’s been bought by a big Japanese firm, Rakuten, so it now has big money behind it.”<\/p>\n
