It was a rough Thursday for PC stocks\u00a0Microsoft<\/strong>\u00a0(NASDAQ:MSFT<\/a>),\u00a0Intel<\/strong>(NASDAQ:INTC<\/a>),\u00a0Hewlett-Packard<\/strong>\u00a0(NYSE:HPQ<\/a>) and the like.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because late Wednesday,\u00a0IDC reported PC sales slid nearly 14% in the first quarter<\/a>, well below the 7.7% decline that was expected\u00a0and the worst drop since the firm began tracking the sector in 1994.<\/p>\n

Ouch.<\/p>\n

To add insult to injury, Microsoft was downgraded Thursday by\u00a0Goldman Sachs<\/strong>(NYSE:GS<\/a>), Normura and Hilliard Lyons. All \u00a0cited the ugly IDC numbers.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s going on? Can these companies \u2014 particularly Microsoft \u2014 evolve?<\/p>\n

Charles Sizemore thinks so, based on hopes of getting Microsoft Office software\u00a0on Apple and Android devices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tug-of-war between hardware and software always favored keeping Office native to the Microsoft Surface tablet. But that may be changing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a game in that does Microsoft \u2026 minimize their plans to grow their tablet business by pushing Office onto their competitors, or do they hold out and see if they can generate margins?\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles thinks the rumor mill is strongly favoring a push onto\u00a0Apple<\/strong>\u00a0(NASDAQ:AAPL<\/a>) devices powered by iOS or mobile gadgets running Android from\u00a0Google<\/strong>(NASDAQ:GOOG<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also hope for the xBox business with innovative in-home entertainment options, Charles says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
